The idea is that every time we see a media text we are seeing the creative producers version of reality rather than actual reality. The mass media places us at at a removed position from reality, meanings can be altered by what is or isn't included in a photo and which angle it was taken for example. Image manipulation takes this further. Other examples are TV shows which are edited down and cut so that they are more entertaining and the jokes appear to be spontaneous.Often we allow ourselves to forget what we are seeing is fiction for our own entertainment. This means it often goes through a process of selection (What to include). Organizing the content in ways that real existence is not. focusing and encouraging the audience is also commonly used to guide the audience to a certain perspective.
